Tourist surge expected for the royal wedding
By Kitty Bean Yancey, USA TODAY
Media film inside Westminster Abbey Tuesday. It will be the site of the wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton April 29.
The wedding date royal-watchers have been waiting for has been announced.
Britain's Prince William will wed Kate Middleton April 29 in London's Westminster Cathedral. Even though the cathedral is generally open to the public, don't expect to get into it on the wedding day unless you are one of the lucky ones to score a ticket.
But, if this event runs true to form of past weddings and royal events, you can join the throngs lining the streets in hopes of getting a glimpse of the couple or maybe even watch the wedding on giant screens set up in a publuc venue. No word on that yet.
But if you're interested in being in London for the wedding, "the sooner you book the better," says Jan Freitag, a vice president of Smith Travel Research, which tracks U.S. and London hotels. "I think occupancy there is going to go through the roof."
And be ready for hotel sticker shock. I know from past experience that it's hard to find a room under $150. And those tend to be spare and small. Also, hotels tend to demand minimum stays for big events -- maybe longer than a tourist on a budget can afford.
Self-described Angophile Nan Beyer, 39, of Arlington Heights, Ill., jumped on the phone Tuesday to try to book a favorite hotel, The Rubens at the Palace, which is next to Buckingham Palace and not far from Westminster Abbey. Guess what the reservationist told her? That she would need to book a 10-day stay. As for price, "We didn't even get to that," says Beyer, who sells crafts and blogs about British topics at nanandbags.typepad.com. She plans to keep trying, but may end up "having a 5 a.m. (wedding-watching) party at my house."
"The London (hotel) market has performed remarkably well in the owntown," Freitag says. "In the downtown, London was the best performer" of any city, he says.
According to the latest Hotel Market Outlook, a quarterly report issued by the Deloitte firm, year to date hotel revenue gains in London have smashed predictions; revenue per available room is projected to be 10-15% .
